The National Cooperative Business Association's current Cooperative Business Journal has an article by Gabe Rivin focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area worker cooperatives.  Rivin Concludes:

The Bay Area’s politics are still loaded with hyperbolic idealism, more than 30 years since the beginning of the counter-cultural movement. Yet, walking around Rainbow Grocery, looking at the dozens of workers who have well-paying jobs and excellent health insurance, it’s starting to seem that these former radicals got it right.
