I have been given 2 minutes to introduce the idea of Worker Cooperatives before a screening of The Economics of Happiness in Ithaca, NY. Not very long, so I thought I would bring a one-page handout. With little space to work with my thought was to let people know
- a) the definition
- b) that these businesses exist throughout the country (that that they are not just theoretical or concentrated in San Francisco)
- c) that they can be thriving businesses (that they are not structurally doomed), and
- d) where to find more information, especially for Upstate New Yorkers
I wish I could have fit in
- x) that they serve many different types of people, including low-income people
- y) that they tend to be highly environmentally reponsible, and
- z) that they tend to have high rates of job satisfaction
but I wasn't sure how to represent these in a simple way. I suppose that's what I will say in 2 minutes, as well as tout the city's local cooperatives. The first line is stolen from the U.S. Federations's What is a Worker Cooperative?
