The Las Flores Metalarte furniture manufacturing firm was established in 1973 to ease the unemployment problem in the barrio of Las Flores in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Since then, Metalarte has become the biggest and most successful firm in the island. Its success is attributed to government support, investments in real estate and machinery, as well as a democratic organizational structure which encourages worker participation in decision making.
