Other Avenues Food Store Cooperative opened in 1974 as a small neighborhood store, run and supported by community members dedicated to providing an alternative to corporate grocery stores. We are now a collectively-run, worker owned and managed natural foods cooperative. Throughout our thirty-seven year history, we have remained committed to organics, healthy food, sustainability, worker-ownership, and true community involvement.

Our worker-owners share in all work, including cashiering, bookkeeping, department management, maintenance, promotion, and all other aspects of running a medium-sized business.

Starting pay is $12.58 per hour. After passing a six-month probation period, pay increases to $13.08, with full medical, dental, and vision insurance commencing at three months. A $0.50/hour raise is granted every year thereafter upon satisfying job requirements. Worker-owners also become eligible for profit sharing after they have passed their 6-month evaluation. Ample paid time off is granted, equivalent to 3 1/2 weeks off per year.

As members of a cooperative, we are not just workers and partners, but are committed to mutual support of one another and other cooperatives, to quality natural foods, and to provide excellent service to the community. Members ideally have experience and interest in the following areas:

• Natural Foods, Supplements, and Health
• Groups that operate cooperatively by consensus
• Work that is often physically demanding

A few words about the applicant probation period: The decision on membership is generally made after a six-month period, during which the applicant and Other Avenues decide on their mutual fit. Prospective members will be expected to function like worker-owners during their evaluation period. Upon becoming a worker-owner, the member contributes $300.00 as a buy-in to the co-op.

Positions range from 30 to 40 hours per week. All members must have enough time and flexibility in their schedules to work weekend days and occasional long hours.
